Varicose Vein Symptoms

Are you curious about what’s causing your legs to feel swollen and achy, especially at night? Have you noticed that some of the veins in your legs appear to bulge and twist? If you answered yes to either of these questions, you may have varicose veins.

Both achy legs and visibly swollen veins are signs of varicose veins—a medical condition whose symptoms are caused by failed vein valves. Although varicose veins only present cosmetic concerns for some, for others they can also cause intense pain and be a sign of an underlying medical condition.

If you believe you’re experiencing varicose vein symptoms, call Summit Skin & Vein Care to schedule your complimentary vein screening. We provide innovative diagnostic services and minimally-invasive varicose vein treatment options, helping those with varicose veins in the Kansas City area reclaim their health, comfort, and confidence.

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins appear when vein valves become damaged or weakened. These failing vein valves prevent blood from efficiently returning to the heart, causing blood to accumulate in the vein and eventually resulting in the vein’s enlargement. Although this process can affect all veins, varicose veins specifically refer to the larger veins. When smaller veins and capillaries go through a similar process, they are referred to as spider veins.

  • Light red spots on your lower legs
  • Dull aching in the legs
  • Swollen feet after standing for long periods of time
  • Thickened or hardened skin

  • Restless legs syndrome (RLS)
  • Numbness
  • Cramping

  • Unhealed Sores

Treatment for Varicose Vein Symptoms

Varicose vein symptoms may improve by elevating the legs, wearing compression stockings, and lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, though it’s important to speak with your health care provider before attempting to treat your condition. At Summit Skin & Vein Care, we offer free vein screenings, during which our staff will provide you with diagnosis and treatment options.

Risk Factors

The following people have a higher risk of developing varicose veins:

  • Those with a family history of varicose veins and venous disorders
  • Those over the age of 50
  • Pregnant women
  • Those who spend long periods of time on their feet or sit for long periods of time as a part of their job
  • Those who are obese or overweight
  • Those with diabetes
  • Those with previous leg injuries

When Should I Be Concerned About Varicose Veins?

If you suspect an underlying medical condition, or if your varicose vein symptoms are becoming disabling, it’s a good idea to visit a phlebologist (a doctor specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of vein disorders) as soon as possible.

Here are some other indicators that it’s time to seek medical treatment for your varicose veins:

  • Daily tasks are becoming difficult to perform
  • The skin surrounding your varicose veins begins to bleed, develop sores, or becomes flaky and itchy
  • Your veins become swollen and painful, potentially indicating a blood clot
