SkinPen® creates a series of hundreds of vertical microscopic channels into the dermis (the skin) to stimulate the natural production of new collagen and elastin, which are the structures of the skin that maintain elasticity and firmness. Say goodbye to fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, and other skin textures with this minimally invasive procedure.

What Is Microneedling With SkinPen®?

Also called Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) and dermarolling, microneedling is a procedure that uses the body’s natural healing response in order to increase the amount of collagen or elastin in the skin. The hundreds of microscopic channels created in your skin by SkinPen® allow for the controlled and temporary leakage of blood, serum, and lymph. Through this process, your body initiates the “wound healing cascade” that can be summed up in three phases.

Phase One: Inflammation

When the dermal tissue is pierced by SkinPen®, platelets release cytokines and growth factors that act as signals for your body’s immune system. Special cells are sent to disinfect wounds and increase the blood supply so that fresh, new cellular and extracellular materials can be created.

Phase Two: Proliferation

Cells that create the extracellular matrix, the keratinocyte cells of the epidermis and other epidermal cells, continue to divide and populate areas of damage, secreting growth factors as well as collagen and elastin.

Phase Three: Remodeling

New dermal tissues are formed with fully-matured vasculature and stronger collagen than your skin had prior to the SkinPen® procedure.

Preparing for Your Microneedling Appointment

For seven days prior to your appointment, there are several things you should avoid in order to get the best results from your microneedling procedure. Do not use any facial cleansing brushes like the Clarisonic® and avoid intentional direct sunlight exposure. You should also avoid the use of Alpha Hydroxy acids, Beta Hydroxy acids, Retinol (Vitamin A), Vitamin C (in a low pH formula), or anything else considered “active” skincare. If you are unsure of what products you can and cannot use, simply ask our trained staff for guidance.

Our Microneedling Procedures

At Summit Skin & Vein Care, we pride ourselves on our cutting-edge microneedling procedures. Using state of the art technology and techniques, we create custom treatment plans tailored to meet each client’s individual needs. Our microneedling treatments help to reduce wrinkles, improve texture and tone, and decrease acne scarring – making skin look even better than it did before. We strongly believe in providing the best possible outcome for all clients and strive to deliver the highest quality results in a spa-like setting focused on safety and comfort.

In order to make you most comfortable, we apply a topical numbing cream to your skin before applying a sterile, disposable cartridge of microneedles to SkinPen®. Once this is done we will apply a thin layer of topical serum to your skin and select the most appropriate microneedling channeling treatment depth based on your skin’s needs. With a gentle motion, we glide the pen across the targeted areas for repair. The procedure takes anywhere from 45 to 75 minutes to complete. You will experience some pinkness immediately after your procedure and some sloughing off of the top layer of skin at 3 to 4 days after the treatment. You will receive a post-procedure skincare kit that will help to soothe, calm, and protect your skin for 7 days after the procedure.

What Are the Benefits of Microneedling?

Microneedling with SkinPen® improves fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, and other skin texture issues. It is minimally invasive and non-ablative with minimal-to-no social downtime. It is an in-office procedure that is done quickly and simply, and SkinPen® has a superior safety profile. As the only FDA-cleared device of its kind on the market, you can be assured it is safe and effective. With built-in locking mechanisms for the sterile cartridge of microneedles and set time limits for the use of each cartridge, nothing ensures cleanliness like SkinPen®.

Reasons to Choose Microneedling Treatment Over Other Skin Treatment Options

If you are suffering from a skin condition like acne, fine lines, wrinkles, or pigmentation issues, you may be comparing different treatment methods. Other treatment options are also effective at addressing these skin conditions, but there are pros and cons to each method. Here are a few reasons to consider micro needle rolling as opposed to other effective skin treatment options.

  1. One reason to choose skin needling is that it is non-invasive. You may be able to get great results without going through surgery.
  2. SkinPen® is like a dermastamp, which achieves results without a lot of downtime. Some other effective options such as laser treatment work well, but they may require some downtime as your skin goes through the healing phase. With microneedling, you will experience some skin sloughing, but it should not impact your social life in a large way.
  3. These tiny needles are extremely effective at stimulating collagen production with minimal bleeding and a low risk of infection. Some other ablative skin treatments are effective but have a slightly higher risk of infection.
  4. The micro-needling procedure can be more effective than chemical peels and laser treatments. Some chemicals don’t work well for those with sensitive skin, and SkinPen® is a great option for those people.
  5. While some skin irritation and slight discomfort are common after the procedure, these side effects do not last long and are usually more tolerable than the side effects from some other procedures.

Is SkinPen® More Effective Than At-Home Microneedling?

Summit Skin & Vein Care employs trained medical professionals, and our procedures include the use of top-of-the-line equipment. The options for microneedling that you can buy for do-it-yourself treatment are much less effective. A dermaroller you can buy and use at home is only giving a very light exfoliation of the dead skin cells on your face. People who use at-home dermarollers may also find themselves prone to infections of the skin. Without the safety standards of the SkinPen®, it is practically impossible to ensure a dermaroller is sterile, so with every use, you are pressing bacteria directly into your skin. A dermaroller you use at home also cannot be customized to suit your needs. We are able to adapt your treatment specifically to your needs and skin type to deliver a full rejuvenation of your skin in ways at-home treatments simply cannot match. In fact, many find that at-home microneedling makes their skin worse.
