Endovenous Laser Treatment (CTEV™) For Your Varicose Veins

Endovenous Laser Treatment, sometimes called Endovenous Laser Ablation, provides an effective alternative to the traditional surgical varicose vein treatment.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are larger-than-normal, gnarled veins most often in the legs, caused by a pooling of blood from valves within the veins not closing all of the way. CTEV™ is an image-guided and minimally invasive treatment that cauterizes and closes these veins. Varicose veins affect about half of people who are 50 years or older. They can lead to more serious health issues and are hereditary. They most often occur in women and in older people, but pregnant women can also get them – though they tend to go away a few months after your pregnancy. If you have varicose veins and notice heaviness, tightness, pain with walking and cramps in your legs these symptoms could be caused by varicose veins, which is why many people choose to treat them medically.

Endovenous Laser Treatment Vs. Surgical Varicose Vein Treatment

Surgical varicose vein treatment involves stripping the greater saphenous vein (GSV) and the short saphenous vein (SSV). With Endovenous Laser Treatment, we insert a small laser fiber, usually through a needle stick in the skin, into the varicose vein. This fiber delivers pulses of light into the vein, which causes it to collapse and seal shut. Endovenous Laser Treatment is done in our office under local anesthesia. Following the procedure, which generally takes about an hour, we protect the area using a bandage or compression hose. You may return to work and resume normal activities the next day. Endovenous Laser Treatment has been found to be more effective with fewer complications and less pain than traditional vein stripping techniques.

Why Consider Endovenous Laser Treatment

Varicose veins are simply enlarged, twisted veins that generally do not cause problems for those who have them, but they are unsightly and can even cause pain or discomfort for some people. Endovenous Laser Treatment is less invasive than a surgical response and is 95 to 98% effective at closing your varicose veins to reveal a healthy, clear complexion.

How to Prepare For Endovenous Laser Treatment

Please let us know all medications you are taking – even herbal supplements and vitamins. Tell us if you have any allergies, especially to local anesthetic medications, general anesthesia or to contrast dye that contains iodine. We will let you know if you need to cease use of any medications prior to your treatment. Wear comfortable, loose clothing to the appointment and plan to have someone drive you home after we’re done. You should be able to return to your normal activities the following day.

Are Varicose Veins Different From Spider Veins?

Yes, varicose veins are different from spider veins. Varicose veins are large and bulging veins that can be seen and felt, caused by blood pooling in them. Spider veins are tiny red or blue lines that look like a piece of webbing underneath your skin – they cannot be felt. Spider veins don’t tend to have the same side effects of pain and leg swelling that can be associated with varicose veins. They are also not always caused by leaky valves making blood pool, they can be caused by other venous insufficiencies. Spider veins do not always lead to varicose veins, although it is possible to have both.
