What Causes Cellulite and How To Get Rid of It

Cellulite is a condition where the skin has areas with underlying fat deposits, giving it a dimpled and lumpy appearance; it is most noticeable on the buttocks and thighs. It can affect both sexes but dermatologists say cellulite affects up to 90 percent of women at some point, mainly because they are more likely to have certain types of fat and connective tissue. So what causes cellulite, and how do you get rid of it? Read on to learn more.

Symptoms of Cellulite

Cellulite is often classified by three grades:

  1. No clinical symptoms, but a microscopic examination of cells from the area detects underlying anatomical changes that align with cellulite.
  2. Cellulite requires the skin to show pallor, be a lower temperature, and have decreased elasticity, in addition to anatomical changes noted by microscopic examinations.
  3. There is visible roughness of the skin (like an orange peel) along with all of the grade two signs.

What Causes Cellulite?

  • Hormones likely play an important role in cellulite development. Estrogen, insulin, noradrenaline, thyroid hormones and prolactin could be a large part of the production process.
  • Genetics may predispose an individual to particular characteristics associated with cellulite like gender, race, slow metabolism, distribution of fat just under the skin, and circulation.
  • Diets that are fatty, salty or carb-heavy with too little fiber will likely contribute to greater amounts of cellulite.
  • Lifestyle choices like smoking or living a sedentary lifestyle with long periods of sitting or standing in one position are linked to higher likelihood of cellulite.

How to Get Rid of Cellulite

Adopting a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, and moderate weekly exercise will help prevent more cellulite growth and diminish some already present. To beat it for good, professional treatment is needed.

At Summit Skin & Vein Care, we provide FDA-approved clinical solutions like Thermage® loose skin and cellulite treatment, a non-invasive technique involving radio frequency technology that works through all skin layers, not just the surface. This will tighten your skin’s collagen and promote new collagen growth. You can see some immediate results and your skin will show continued improvement following your treatment.
