Safe Exercises for Varicose Veins

If you have an active lifestyle, varicose veins can slow you down. What can you do when you don’t want to cut exercise out of your life but you also want to keep your varicose veins from getting worse? Here are some safe exercises for people with varicose or spider veins:

Low-Impact Exercises

Walking

Low-impact exercises are good for your veins because there’s no jarring or pounding movement. Walking is perfect for strengthening your calf muscle without unnecessary strain. Strong calf muscles help with blood circulation which can minimize the amount of stress on your veins.

Bicycle or Elliptical

Using a bike or elliptical is a great way to get your heart pumping without putting stress on your veins. The smooth motion on a bike or elliptical is designed to be gentle on your body while also encouraging calorie burn. You can also do bicycle leg exercises while you lay on your back.

Exercise Do’s and Don’ts with Varicose Veins

Do:

  • Try to move around frequently instead of standing still
  • Rock back and forth on your heels if you’re unable to get a workout in – the motion will activate your calf
  • Elevate your legs after your workout to encourage blood flow

Don’t:

  • Run or jog – the jarring effect of your feet on the payment can put more strain on your veins
  • Weightlift, or if you do, wear compression socks and use light weights to avoid compressing your veins and limiting blood flow
  • Try to push yourself too fast – your veins will thank you!
