SummitSkinBlogPic

Holiday season is coming, and we couldn’t be more excited! This season is all about being thankful and giving to others, and luckily Lee’s Summit has many wonderful shops and boutiques where you can find the perfect gifts for all your loved ones. Besides checking out our November Specials, here is a list of great local Lee’s Summit shops that we highly recommend for your holiday shopping.

Blue Heron Design

Blue Heron is a one-stop-shop for a variety of jewelry, accessories, and knickknacks. Something that makes this shop so special is its commitment to offering customers both fair trade and locally produced items. Fair trade products ensure that producers in developing countries receive fair wages for their work. Buying fair trade means that you know your money is going toward the fair wages for hard workers in the developing world. Some of Blue Heron’s featured fair trade products include sustainable jewelry by Zulugrass of Kenya and Wakami bracelets from Guatemala. Another Blue Heron favorite is their locally made jewelry. Their team consists of local artists who create one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry right here in Lee’s Summit. They even produce custom jewelry designs for individual customers, which means that finding a unique gift for your loved one is never hard to do at Blue Heron.

Lovin’ Soap Studio

The local Lovin’ Soap Studio is an offshoot of Lee’s Summit resident Amanda Griffin’s Lovin’ Soap Project, which is a non-profit that aims to empower women in developing countries through teaching the skill of soapmaking. At Griffin’s soapmaking studio she teaches patrons everything from the basics of making soap to making various molds, colors and designs. The gift of a specialty soapmaking class is perfect for your more creative and natural products loving friends and loved ones. In addition, the Lee’s Summit based Imperial Drifter line of beard care products produced by Griffin’s husband is available for purchase. These high-quality, natural products are the perfect men’s gifts this holiday season.

@jolly’s

@jolly’s is a fun and trendy boutique owned by a local mother-daughter duo Linda and Mallory. Their dynamic relationship brings plenty of laughter, fun, and heart into this local clothing boutique. They make shopping at their clothing store a real experience, so that it is impossible to leave their shop without a smile on your face. @jolly’s is always filled with seasonal favorites, new trends, and unique finds. Local Business Spotlight: A Thyme for Everything

Local Business Spotlight_

A Thyme for Everything is Lee’s Summit’s premiere kitchen supply shop. Located in historic downtown Lee’s Summit, A Thyme for Everything opened in 2006. In opening this local kitchen supply store, owner Jet Pabst has said that she accomplished a long-time dream. This cooking shop truly is a local gem, even drawing customers from all over the Kansas City metro area. What makes this shop so special? Read on to find out.

A Thyme for Food, Fun, & Friends

Lee’s Summit’s favorite cooking supply store, A Thyme for Everything, offers a wide variety of gourmet cookware, chef’s tools, decorating supplies, decor, and cookbooks. Each item has been picked out specifically with local customers in mind so that they can find whatever specialty kitchen item they need (or want!). If you love food, cooking, or decorating, then you are sure to adore this kitchen and cooking store.

Beyond selling cooking and kitchen supplies, A Thyme for Everything also carries delicious treats, like local Kansas City Christopher Elbow chocolates, soups, dips, baking mixes, herbs, and specialty pastas. Not much of a cook? This cooking supply shop is more than just a store. It also offers various cooking classes every month taught by true culinary chefs. Class instructors have a wide range of skills and diverse backgrounds, including Indonesian, Italian, French, and gluten-free. Classes range from sweet (cake decorating, cookies, and gingerbread house decorating) to savory (Mexican, sushi, French, and more). Around the holidays, they hold special classes for seasonal dishes that will help you construct your next Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Valentine’s Day meal.

Harvest FestivalOctober local events

Traditionally, harvest festivals were annual events held to celebrate the main harvest season and a short respite from long days working in the fields. These celebrations always featured ample food, along with music and other forms of merriment. The tradition continues with the Farmer’s Market Harvest Festival on October 3 from 7 am to 12 pm. Attendees can enjoy live music from the Lee’s Summit Symphony while shopping for fresh, local produce, baked goods, and handmade crafts. For the kids, there is free pumpkin decorating available for the first 100 children in attendance. Join in on this beloved tradition and you can get your grocery shopping and a fun family day out all in one.

Witches Eve

Ready for the witching hour? Very Violet Boutique is a lovely local store filled with beautiful antique furniture and homemade crafts. This year on October 15, the boutique is hosting a ladies shopping night. From 5 pm to 9 pm, local women are invited to head over with friends for shopping, drinks, and lots of cackles. Attendees are encouraged, but not required, to dress up. Spend the evening enjoying “scary punch,” wine, and snacks with your friends. Don’t forget about the shopping–you’ll get to browse through a wonderful selection of fall clothing and accessories, including an exciting trunk show from Encore Boutique. Leave the kids at home and enjoy a much-needed evening out with your friends! Very Violet Boutique is located at 111 SW 2nd St.

Boos, Barks & Badges Halloween Parade

If you’ve never participated in the annual Boos, Barks & Badges Halloween Parade before, this is your year. On Saturday, October 25 from 10 am to 12 pm, families and their dogs are invited to attend this Lee’s Summit tradition. Those who wish to dress up in costumes, including children and dogs, are welcome to join in on the parade from City Hall Plaza to Howard Station Park. Make sure to bring your best costume game because at 11 am in Howard Station Park you’ll have the opportunity to compete in a costume contest. After the parade, participating downtown businesses are hosting a trick-or-treat for local kids. Specialized vehicles from the Lee’s Summit Police Department and Fire Department will also be on display. Don’t forget to stop by the adopt-a-pet station by the Lee’s Summit Animal Control division where you might just find your furry new best friend. This event is truly fun for the whole family.

Top 3 Lunch Spots in Lee’s Summit

The city of Lee’s Summit is full of great restaurants, cafes, and diners. We all have our favorite spot to grab coffee, or meet friends for brunch on the weekend. But what about lunch? With work and busy schedules all too often this essential meal gets replaced by a granola bar or a pitiful sandwich. These three irresistible local Lee’s Summit lunch restaurants will get you excited about eating lunch again.

The Fig Treelunch restaurants

This cozy family-oriented diner is a true Lee’s Summit original. They serve both American comfort food and Middle Eastern specialties. So whether you’re in the mood for a Reuben sandwich or shawarma the friendly staff at the Fig Tree will have something to satisfy your lunch craving. The restaurant’s owners make using locally-sourced, fresh, and organic products a priority, which means that when you go here for lunch you’re supporting more than one local business. Despite its location in a strip mall, the Fig Tree is full of local charm not often found in such locales. We highly recommend one of their daily homemade bakery specials, or their delicious hummus appetizer platter with pita bread and freshly grilled vegetables.

Frankie Farelanes Fast(ish) Food

This casual local lunch spot is one of Lee’s Summit’s latest restaurant additions. Located in the charming old downtown area, this newly opened lunch joint is an offshoot of another more established Lee’s Summit restaurant, Stuey McBrew’s. Frankie’s differentiates itself from Stuey’s by focusing on classic, quick street foods like tacos, wings, and sliders. However, don’t let the “fast” theme make you think this charming local restaurant is comparable to a Taco Bell. They are committed to using fresh, hormone-free ingredients, so you can feel good about what you’re eating. Their interior is modern and sleek, with stainless steel and wood details throughout the space. So, grab your coworkers and head over for a fast(ish) and delicious lunch at Frankie Farelanes.

Ginger Sue’s

Ginger Sue’s is a locally and family-owned breakfast and lunch cafe. After opening their first location in Liberty in 2007, owners David Bradley and Ginger Fuller later opened their Lee’s Summit branch. They strive to create a friendly atmosphere where people can come together for a good meal and good conversation. At Ginger Sue’s, you are always able to “Eat Among Friends,” just like the restaurant’s motto proclaims. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed, with plenty of open space and natural light pouring in. Wondering about their food? They have a fabulous selection of omelets, including the unique Aloha Awakea Omelette, which is made with pineapple, ham and cheddar-jack cheese with toasted coconut. We also recommend the Salmon Salad, which features a sautéed salmon fillet on a bed of fresh greens, red onion, red pepper, cucumber, carrots and crumbled goat cheese with a house-made balsamic vinaigrette.

(3390 SW Fascination Dr)

Post Coffee Company

Post Coffee is the newest addition to our favorites list. Since its establishment last year, this local cafe has gained a crowd of loyal regulars because of its dedication to quality. They take a no shortcuts approach by roasting and brewing the coffee beans themselves in-house, after sourcing it through direct trade from Costa Rica. Lee’s Summit coffee-lovers appreciate this straightforward approach, as the result is some truly delicious and high-quality coffee. The decor features wood textures, welded iron, a cozy leather couch, a sleek brew bar. The glass garage doors that can be opened during pleasant weather add an extra dose of cool to the already sleek space. As far as we’re concerned, this new addition is here to stay!
