You can’t make a New Year’s resolution for healthier skin if you don’t know the facts behind some of the most common myths about skin out there.

Myth 1: Acne Is for Teenagers

The truth is, anyone can have acne. It doesn’t discriminate between age groups. It’s true that teens are more prone to acne because it is caused by hormones, but even after your hormones balance out you might still have a bit of an acne problem.

Myth 2: Age Spots Are Inevitable

Uneven skin tone and dark spots come from your skin’s reaction to continued environmental exposure, causing visible imperfections. They can show up at any age, depending on your level of sun or toxin exposure, your genetics and your skin type, some are just more resilient than others. By applying sunscreen every morning with your moisturizer, you can start to prevent sun damage now.

Myth 3: Pore-Shrinking Products Work Wonders

Your pore size is determined on your genetics, they are impossible to shrink. To minimize the appearance of larger pores, you can exfoliate your skin a couple of times a week to remove built up dirt, makeup, dead skin and oils that are trapped.

Myth 4: Makeup is Bad for Skin

This is a very common one. From a young age we are taught that loading on the makeup, no matter how skillfully done, is going to clog our pores and cause acne. However, it’s not the makeup itself, it’s the failure to remove it properly so all the grime and oil from the day is layered in with the makeup, which leads to clogged pores.
